Our studio offers a wide range of dance styles & classes suitable for ages.

Check out below what the different styles of dance are at Geraldine inder school of dance and drama.

Classical Ballet

This is the purist form of Dance. This style of dance promotes posture, grace, co ordination and agility while training the student's memory, musicality and body awareness.

We follow the Royal Academy of Dancing syllabus and this is the largest Dance organisation in the world, with over 64 countries teaching this work. Qualifications in this syllabus are recognised worldwide and are held in high esteem. Add Junior Grade start from Tiny tots 3.5 years through to Advanced level. The junior classes start from once a week and graduate to twice weekly at discounted fees. The junior classes have been choreographed in a fun musical based learning style that develops co ordination and skill work.

Senior Grades 6-8 will have 1-2 lessons a week and are encouraged to take twice weekly lessons with one vocational lesson.

Contemporary

This examination syllabus is the first in the world and is designed to give older students a taste of contemporary movement. No prior classical or jazz training is necessary, although a classical background is beneficial. Students aged from 10 years = Contemporary level 1.

From 12 years = Contemporary level 2. There are 6 levels in all and level 6 and solo performance diploma is at year 12 and 13 or NCEA level 2 and 3 in ability. Classical students working from RAD Intermediate and above will have this work timetabled around their classical classes to improve their body alignment and flexibility. Class once a week.

Hip-Hop

These classes are a fun funky styled syllabus. They include the latest dance trends in Hip-Hop. Students will learn combinations and short dances to include stage and performance work.

These classes can be taken once a week and will complement Jazz classes wonderfully.

Jazz

We follow the NZAMD American Jazz Syllabus choreographed by Keith Clifton from L.A.

It is a fun, progressive and stylized dance form that really develops the student's ability to perform with character and attitude while training their technique to a professional level.

RAD Majors

Major students intending to take the vocational exams should attend at least a minimum of 3 ballet classes a week. At this level Pointe work is introduced and a commitment to attend as many lessons as possible is required.

A mix of higher grades 6-8 classes and the timetabled Vocational level classes is a great way to ensure time on the floor. Also where possible, attending a higher or lower level (where student numbers allow), is another way of enhancing ones technique

Tap

We follow the NZAMD American tap syllabus which is a fun, rhythmical syllabus choreographed by Keith Clifton from America (Tony Award winner). All students taking RAD ballet from Grade 2-3 have this free as part of their rhythmical development.

Speech and Drama

At the studio we follow 2 programmes with the speech and Drama classes. The lessons are divided between the NZ Speech Board exam syllabus and production drama work, each of which are always highlighted in the end of year production.

The students develop confidence in, communication skills, theory on voice production and interactive drama skills in group and solo work and self expression. Classes are once a week. Students are expected to memorise poem/prose.

Stretch, Leap and Spin

NZAMD commissioned this syllabus, which has two levels: Junior and Senior. SLS was initiated by Rhondda McGlinchy, Claire Pattern, Nicola Madden and Keith Clifton. It is a fun way to develop flexibility, turning and strength. These fundamentals are essential in assisting young dancers improve their technique.

Classes are once a week but exercises should be practised at home to gain maximum benefit. Students can enter for a fun exam as a class presentation and receive a banner and report.
